Riding the Hot Tamale!

Do you remember Mary Murphy on “So You Think You Can Dance?”  When she thought a dancer or pair of dancers were stunningly good she would do a Mary Murphy Whoop and shout  “You’re on the Hot Tamale Train”.

This past week my horse, Biasini , has been on that Hot Tamale Train.  The weather has been cold and he got a full body clip last weekend but I’m not sure what got him onto that Train!  He would always start out quite sane and sensible and then once I picked him up and started into the work he would be absolutely Hot Hot Hot!  This is my last week with coach Belinda Trussell before Biasini ships down to Florida.  We had four lessons this past week. In all of them Biasini was electric. That was great but it showed up all the little holes in my riding.

When Biasini is hot like this he is very sensitive so my aids must be precise and clear and as delicate as possible.  If my leg moves half  an inch he will react, if my rein aid is two seconds too long he will react. What is the reaction? It could be an unasked for flying change or a burst of speed or just whatever comes into his head! For the first three lessons this “hot” horse was terrific to ride. Here is a video of the canter half pass work that we started last week on a straight line and here it is with the half pass included.

We also worked on the trot half pass. Biasini is grunting in this, not because he in distress but he wants us to know how hard he is working. You an hear me asking Belinda if she can hear him grunting and she says she can!

Finally on Friday, day four of lessons, we worked on the canter pirouettes. Belinda had a devilishly difficult exercise for me. Pirouette two steps, out two steps, pirouette two steps , out two steps,  and repeat until you return to the starting point. Well……on Friday Biasini was absolutely on that Hot Tamale Train. If I moved my outside leg 1/8th of an inch…boom…a big flying  change and you can’t do a pirouette in counter canter.  Belinda would remind me to keep my legs quietly on and I would try again. Then Biasini decided he was not only sparkly but sassy as well and there were a few naughty moves.

Then Belinda got on. And he was pretty sassy with her too. But a rider of  her level of skill and experience gets that sorted out pretty quickly.  She got him listening to her and  did the pirouette exercise beautifully. Then I got back on and  worked through some easier pirouette exercises. To finish up we just did some trot around the arena.

So here he is……….the Hot Tamale Horse!  This is the wonderfully expressive trot Biasini offers when he is the Hot Tamale. I just have to refine my riding to be able to make the most of it when he is on that train!

I like the hot tamale! I have a feeling this is going to be a good winter show season for y’all

I hope so. As an amateur rider I could do with a tamale that was a gnats wisker less hot. 😀

You’re not an amateur rider! You’re his rider!

Happy trials on your annual trek to Florida!

Thank you Jeff. Biasini left early this morning. No doubt he will be speaking about it!😀

Good!! Safe travels to the big guy!! (And I ALWAYS enjoy Biasini’s blog posts and how he “horses around” in them.) He will no doubt be seeing lots on his trip down!

Biasini is a very outspoken fellow. I’m glad you enjoy hearing from him. Thanks for commenting!

I’d be feeling pretty perky if I got to winter in Florida too lol! He must know! 😂

I think you have got it! I think he had his second clip and he knew that the time for getting to warm weather was close. So he just wanted to speed up through the lessons. 😀

Loved watching the videos. Biasini is beautiful! Hoping all goes well for you in Florida.

Thank you Irene . He is a beautifufl horse and certainly the most talented horse I have had. We are both looking forward to Florida.

I don’t know if this is a stupid question but is he chilly (as he had a full body clip), is he trying to keep warm?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It’s not a silly question. There is certainly logic that would back that up. However he usually adjusts to the clip within a day and he had been clipped on the weekend and on last Friday it was a bit warmer with temps just above freezing. The other thing is that he is quite calm when we start and do our warm up work. That is about 15 to 20 minutes. He often perks up when we get into the work. That is normal for him. But this past week the perking up was more than normal and last Friday was a lot more than normal. He is certainly feeling very good. Belinda and I wondered if he was feeling so energetic due to being on the Immune Plus. He’s been on it before and we didn’t notice that but….maybe those herbs have added energy.

Well, that’s good if the Immune Plus makes him feel well and energetic.

I have a Reiki practitioner who works on him and she said what she picked up from him was he knew the second clip meant he was going to the warm weather and he kept thinking it would be any day. So he just wanted to speed through the lessons. He’s quite a character and I do think he’s feeling very well and he’s also very fit. Thanks for commenting Emma.

He is beautiful to watch! Sometimes I think better to be a hot tamale than so lazy you can’t get them moving! I had a Morgan that I believe I worked harder to make his legs move than he actually worked moving them! Lovely post! ❤️❤️❤️

I could not agree more! It is exhausting to get the non moving horse going forward. Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the videos.

I agree. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and to comment. 🐎

Great videos – he’s a lovely horse! My guy isn’t “hot” very often but whenever he is I have to remind myself to capitalize on it to get some of sparkle into his work haha

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Biasini is not usually this hot. This week has been much more than usual. He is a lovely horse and being an overachiever is a good fault to have. Thanks for your comment. Sparkle on!

    You two look AMAZING!

Thank you! It is a challenge for me to ride a hot sensitive horse like this. Especially as he is usually quieter and less sensitive but it is a great feeling so I just need to up my game. Thanks for your encouraging comment
