Lessons and Learning

In just over a week Biasini will get onto the transport and head down to Florida. Waiting for him will be my Florida coach Luis Reteguiz Denizard (aka Lou). He will get Biasini settled in and keep him working until I get down there at the end of December.  At the moment I am working in my lessons with Belinda Trussell (my ‘at home’ coach in Canada) on fine tuning the basics. We have been taking lots of video so Lou can see them and know what we have been working on, how it’s going, and what Belinda is emphasizing.   I am very lucky to have two coaches who communicate well to help Biasini and me.  Here are some of the short videos .

First some canter work and the half pass left, flying change and half pass right. It all goes well but then at the end I am not 100% focused. And I hear about it from Belinda!

Then we moved on to making the half pass, after the flying change, better by being very strict about the change of flexion. To accomplish this Belinda had me move my hands over to the new direction, change Biasini’s flexion and then ask for the change. All with the minimum of aids.

To finish our lesson we did some trot work without stirrups. Belinda has been trying to get me to improve my seat and relax my back. This is something I really struggle with. Belinda’s  suggestion. “Cross your stirrups over and lets’s do some sitting trot with no stirrups.”

Noooooo……  But of course I do not say no. I know better than to say ‘no’ to an Olympian who has trained in Germany. I cross over my stirrups.

When I look at this video I can see it does help me to ride without stirrups. I still have a long way to go to be relaxed enough in my back but this is heading in the right direction. What does this mean for me in Florida?  It means Lou will have me riding  some portion of every lesson without stirrups.  Oh…oh….oh…

Just as an aside since you can see Biasini’s breath in the videos you know how COLD it was in the arena today.  Dressage riders are tough!!!

You ARE very fortunate to have 2 good coaches who speak to each other Anne. Loved the videos 😊

    Without stirrups!!! That’s impressive!

Well it is not easy but it is remarkably effective. So despite the fact that I don’t like it much I have to acknowledge that it helps!

Remember the experience you shared about Florida last year. Awaiting for your this year traveling experience. Thanks for sharing those videos, I sometimes wonder even you have same 24hours in a day like me. Keep on sharing and keep on inspiring ma’am.

Subbashini I will be posting about Florida for sure. My coach there Lou Denizard always has interesting training ideas so I often post about them. And Biasini will be “speaking: of course. And yes I have the same 24 hours and it seems it is never enough. I’m retired and busier than ever! And I think I am very fortunate to be able to be busy.😀

Biasini is such a natural looking mover. Stunning and beautiful

      Thank you
He has three good gaits and if I ride him properly he can show them to advantage.

This is looking really good Anne and Biasini is moving beautifully. In my riding years there was a woman on our hack who also had trouble relaxing her back until she took up the Alexander Technique. It worked a treat for her. It’s a simple exercise you can do for 20 minutes every day that helps to relax the spine and back muscles 🙂💖 xxx

Thank you Xenia. I know the Alexander technique but have not done it for years. I shall start back to it.

I always marvel at the grace with which you ride on the horseback. The videos are really nice. Could you remind me how many years you have been riding if you don’t mind?

I rode from age 8 to 19. Then I did not ride (university, no money, career, some money but no time) for 30 years. I started back when I was 49 when my daughter took up riding and I have never stopped. I will be 70 next June. Thank you for your comment and for taking the time to read the post and look at the video. I really appreciate it.🙂

It is a pleasure learning the work that goes behind the scenes. Few people know the sacrifices that must be made to train. Enjoy Florida.

I will enjoy FL as I am not a big fan of the cold. Thank you for your kind comment.

Niether am I. Thinking of leaving NYC and relocating to Florida in 2019

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Well that would be a big change
NYC is very different culturally and politically from FL. As a Canadian I am always very aware when in FL that I am in the South.

Smiling. I will concentrate on the climate.

Thanks for sharing your videos, you and Biasini look beautiful and I think you make it look easy, but it’s not! Ah, working without stirrups is difficult and it’s funny how you’ll feel pain in muscles you don’t know you have. I shall join you as I trot around and hack my grey warmblood as he and I need some arena work and to get in shape, I will do some riding without stirrups too! 😀

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Diana. Good for you for taking up the no stirrups challenge. I find it tiring but mylower leg works much better with now stirrups and that is what is a big help with Biasini in keeping him up and light. Later on I feel themuscle complaints , usually when I get into bed that night! Do write a post and let us know how your no stirrups work goes. 😃🐴

I am learning so much from this Anne. last time I rode a horse I was 13. If I tried now I would fail dismally lol but you and Biasini seem to have all of it under control. I guess when spectating the experience is vastly different compared to when you are in all the action. I guess I have more to learn as I read your posts. Keep them coming! 🙂

Thank you Dante! I think it all looks so much easier than it is. I watch my coach Belinda ride and it looks like she is just siting there happily doing almost nothing. However I know that she is making little corrections and giving aids to her horse with every stride. I tend to get through a movement and be happy it has gone well and ooops…I’ve lost the thread and something has fallen apart! 😃 thanks for your comment.
