The CDI3* in the Canadian Monsoon.

There is a Cameroonian proverb: “Rain does not fall on one roof alone.  ”  Today I could have coined a new Canadian proverb: “Rain does not fall on one rider alone.” There was constant rain today for the CDI3* (Concours Dressage International) at the Caledon Equestrian Park.  The rain rained on all the riders competing in the Grand Prix Special. This competition is the last chance for riders to acquire scores toward qualifying to be on the Canadian Dressage Team for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon , North Carolina in September.  Today it was down to the wire!

My coach Belinda Trussell and her horse Tattoo were the first of the WEG contenders in the ring.

Tattoo did not seem to mind the rain.

Next in was Megan Lane on Zodiac. The rain decided to rain a bit harder on them but Megan always smiles rain or no rain.

At the end of their test both horse and rider were soaked. Zodiac looked like he would be happy to get back to his stall.

The gate keeper had come dressed for the rain.

The third of the contenders for WEG was Diane Creech riding Diane C. I think it rained the hardest for them.

But they carried on.

In the photos all the horses look black but only Tattoo actually is a black horse. Zodiac and Diane C are both bay (brown with black legs and tails) but they look black because they were so wet. We have had a long spell of unusually hot and dry weather and I think this rain travelled a long way for the opportunity to rain on these riders!

All three riders did a good job in the conditions and now the scores are in. To be selected for the Canadian Dressage Team for WEG there will be a calculation of scores from other competitions here in Canada and in Florida during the winter.  The process of this calculation is a complicated one and I do not really understand it myself, so would not venture to try to explain it to you. Also, the horses in contention will be seen by two Canadian Team vets and examined at their home barns. Equestrian Canada will make the announcement of  who is on the team sometime in August.

    Wow…
I understand it wasn’t fun in that moment, but we haven’t seen rain a month or longer here…soooo nice

Same here it has been so hot and so dry. So it was not pleasant for the riders but the rain was much needed.

Oh my, such a shame it chose that day to pour! Gorgeous photos tho Anne – hope you share the results!

Once the team is announced I will put up a post for sure. The process of team selection is complicated and they average scores, choose a drop score etc as well they send out team vets to do an extensive examination of the horses under consideration. Fo the CDIlast Sunday 1st was Megan Lane, 2nd Diane Creech and 3rd Belinda Trussell.

As long as the weather is warm I can deal with rain. Well, sort of. It makes it a bit hard to see where you’re going when the rain is splashing in your face. And then there’s the cleanup afterward–dirty, wet tack! There should be extra points awarded for competing in the rain. Hope there were a lot of qualifying scores–I don’t know what the qualifier is for WEG.

Such elegance in the competition, in spite of the falling rain! And I’ve always noticed, the horses’ names… I love them, Zodiac, Tattoo… Biasini. 🙂 Wishing you all a lovely week!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thanks. The names are chosen by the breeders often having the same starting letters as their sire. Have a good week!

Well at least it rained on everyone. I wonder who minded the most, the riders or the horses?!!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

It might be equal. The mare Diane C was not happy and her rider did a skillful job with her.

Funny that the horse didn’t like the rain – used to a sheltered life!

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Out in the wild horses turn their backs to the wind and keep their heaads down to keep the rain out of their ears. As with many things in riding we are asking the horses to do something that is not natural to them….go into the wind and rain and keep their heads up.

I never thought of it like that, but that makes a lot of sense.

Of course it rained on them the poor people!

How did they end up placing and what were their percentages like, if you don’t mind me asking?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Diane Creech got a 70.1 and Megan Lane a 70.2 or close to it. Belinda got a 68.6 so they were 1st,2nd,3rd out of a class of 8.

Your photos are gorgeous ! It’s a hard to beat a beautiful dressage horse in action, when it comes to beauty. You do them justice with your photography. It must of been something extra to watch them live.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you ! I’m glad you liked the photos. It is wonderful to see these horses and the very good riders.

My pleasure. I bet it is! When I lived in Gothenburg (Sweden,) I used to go to all the big equestrian games in that city, and the other cities in the region. Where I live now most bigger equestrian events are rodeos. Fun in another way.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

          Indeed!

Wow! The pics are gorgeous. I can’t imagine riding in these conditions! My sister and I got caught in a thunderstorm ONE TIME while trail riding. SOOOOO miserable for everyone. The horses just wanted to turn their butts to the wind. Couldn’t blame them.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Well it coulsn’t have been much fun for the riders today either. And it was much cooler weather as well.

Is the rain just a nuisance for horse and rider, or does it reach a point
where performance is affected because of footing? Just wondering, Anne.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

The footing at this venue is excellent and is not affected by even a heary rain. Nowadays most of teh good venues have this type of footing and also in places like Florida where they can have torrential rain they set up good drainage underneath. The only thing that will stop a competition is thunder and lightening.

      1. sandyjwhite Avatar

        Interesting. Thanks, Anne.
