Two Little Boys Lyrical Challenge #3

Australia. Six months in a campervan with two adults and two kids aged 2 and 4. It was the trip of a lifetime. As we drove around Australia, 26,000 kilometers in total, we listened to cassette tapes (this was 1990) and to the radio. There was one radio show, “Austrailia All Over” that was a favourite with us. On that show we heard a song by that captured our hearts and our imaginations.  This is my last response post to the Three Day Lyrical Challenge.  Two Little Boys. Do have a listen …. it’s a very special song.

Here are the lyrics to this song.

Two little boys had two little toys

Each had a wooden horse

Gaily they played each summer’s day

Warriors both of course

One little chap then had a mishap

Broke off his horse’s head

Wept for his toy then cried with joy

As his young playmate said

Did you think I would leave you crying

When there’s room on my horse for two

Climb up here Jack and don’t be crying

I can go just as fast with two

When we grow up we’ll both be soldiers

And our horses will not be toys

And I wonder if we’ll remember

When we were two little boys

Long years had passed, war came so fast

Bravely they marched away

Cannon roared loud, and in the mad crowd

Wounded and dying lay

Up goes a shout, a horse dashes out

Out from the ranks so blue

Gallops away to where Joe lay

Then came a voice he knew

Did you think I would leave you dying

When there’s room on my horse for two

Climb up here Joe, we’ll soon be flying

I can go just as fast with two

Did you say Joe I’m all a-tremble

Perhaps it’s the battle’s noise

But I think it’s that I remember

When we were two little boys

Do you think I would leave you dying

There’s room on my horse for two

Climb up here Joe, we’ll soon by flying

Back to the ranks so blue

Can you feel Joe I’m all a tremble

Perhaps it’s the battle’s noise

But I think it’s that I remember

When we were two little boys

We loved this song and I still find it very moving.  For this last challenge I will nominate three other bloggers to take up the Three Day Lyrical Challenge if they would like to do so.

  1. James J. Cudney IV. I’ve known many people who say they could write a best selling novel if only…. Well James Cudney has written and had published two novels and is working on a third and probably has a fourth in the works. He is also a prolific blogger reviewing other books and sometimes writing about his life and the process of writing, editing and getting a book published.  Check him out at This Is My Truth Now.

2. Whippetwisdom “A journey through the seasons with two adopted whippets, a poet,     and a camera.”  I love reading this blog; beautiful photos from the north of Scotland,        enchanting whippets who frolic and gambol through the photos and Xenia’s lovely            poems; haiku , tankas and more.

3. Danny at Dream Big Dream Often He writes posts about things that are going on in his   life and usually there is a philosphical aspect to his posts that look at life as part of the     grand scheme of things.  Also…every day he poses a question “Let Me Ask You A                  Question”.  I find these tremendously entertaining.  The questions are always                    intersting, or thought provoking or just plain outrageous!!

So that’s it for me and the Three Day Challenge!  I enjoyed it, managed to keep it horse related and I hope you enjoyed it too.

Those Irish Rovers really made a name for themselves back in the day before instant youtube hits! How funny to hear them now!

Its different to my ears. But for the fact that I listen to country music I found myself rocking back and forth:)

It isn’t the kind of song I usually listen to either but the story of it really drew me in.

I have always been quite fond of Irish music, so much soul, heart and jaunty tunes. What a sweet song, I can understand how it is a wonderful memory for you.

I like this version as well. Thanks for commenting Laura

Despite its jaunty rhythm and melody, that song is a tearjerker!

      It gets me every time.

Thank you for the kind mention Anne. I shall politely decline your invitation and will not allow a ping back to a Rolf Harris song. Rolf Harris is not a popular figure here and accused of indecently assaulting young girls.

Iquite uunderstand your position on this. . It is a shame that the song has been associated with him. Had I known about the harrassment i would have tried to find another version. Thank you for this comment!

I have taken Rolf Harris version of the song off and put on The Irish Rovers. Thank you for notifying me of the history of Rolf Harris that I was not aware of.

You are very welcome Anne and I am glad you found a different artist performing the song 💜
