I was nominated by the Aesthetic Spirit at Holding Water to take part in the Three Day Lyrical Challenge. At first I thought: “Oh No! How can I find horsey themes for this challenge?” But then I thougth about it for a bit and realized it would be fun. So thank you Aesthetic Spirit for this challenge. Here is my response for Day One. Being for The Benefit of Mr. Kite by the Beatles.
This album hit the airwaves when I was in second year university> All my friends and I were absolutely gobsmacked and awestruck with the album. It was such a complete departure from anything that had come before. We would put the LP onto a small portable record player in one of the classrooms and listen while eating our lunch. We would discuss the lyrics and the cover and the melodies and the genius of the whole album.
Where does the horse fit in? Well here are the lyrics.
For the benefit of Mr. Kite
There will be a show tonight on trampoline
The Hendersons will all be there

Lastly through a hogshead of real fire!

Henry the horse DANCES THE WALTZ! Henry was clearly a dressage horse. I knew nothing about dressage, and the freestyle dressage to music, back then but when I heard it again I knew and I said to myself: “That’s going to be my first response to the Lyrical Challenge.”

- Emma Cownie who is a visual artist. Her work has a wonderful vibrancy!
