Henry the Horse! Lyrical Challenge #1

I was nominated by the Aesthetic Spirit at Holding Water to take part in the Three Day Lyrical Challenge.  At first I thought:  “Oh No! How can I  find horsey themes for this challenge?”  But then I thougth about it for a bit and realized it would be fun. So thank you Aesthetic Spirit for this challenge. Do check out her blog via the  link above to find some interesting things to read about, including a horse breed native to India, the Kathiawari!

Here is my response for Day One.  Being for The Benefit of Mr. Kite by the Beatles.

This album hit the airwaves when I was in second year university> All my friends and I were absolutely gobsmacked and awestruck with the album. It was such a complete departure from anything that had come before. We would put the LP onto a small portable record player in one of the classrooms and listen while eating our lunch. We would discuss the lyrics and the cover and the melodies and the genius of the whole album.

Where does the horse fit in? Well here are the lyrics.

For the benefit of Mr. Kite
There will be a show tonight on trampoline
The Hendersons will all be there
Late of Pablo Fanques Fair-what a scene
Over men and horses hoops and garters
Lastly through a hogshead of real fire!
In this way Mr. K. will challenge the world!

The celebrated Mr. K.
Performs his feat on Saturday at Bishops Gate
The Hendersons will dance and sing
As Mr. Kite fly’s through the ring don’t be late
Messrs. K and H. assure the public
Their production will be second to none
And of course Henry The Horse dances the waltz!

The band begins at ten to six
When Mr. K. performs his tricks without a sound
And Mr. H. will demonstrate
Ten summer sets he’ll undertake on solid ground
Having been some days in preparation
A splendid time is guaranteed for all
And tonight Mr. Kite is topping the bill

Songwriters: John Lennon / Paul McCartney

Henry the horse DANCES THE WALTZ!  Henry was clearly a dressage horse. I knew nothing about dressage, and the freestyle dressage to music, back then but when I heard it again I knew and I said to myself:  “That’s going to be my first response to the Lyrical Challenge.”
I also nominate three other bloggers to take up this challenge if they so desire.

  1. Lord Zoolon , who is a composer and lyricist himself. He has some very cool electronic creations on his blog.
  2. Emma Cownie who is a visual artist. Her work has a wonderful vibrancy!
  3. Michele Pianist at Poems and Partitas. Michele is also a musician who describes her blog site as: ” a pianist gets lost inside a library”.

My Day Two response will be up tomorrow …..or maybe the next day. Till then keep on singing Dear Readers!

Ah, the intersection of horses with the Beatles is a fine, fine mix.
