We at last have some warmer weather and I decided it was perfect to take Biasini for a hack in the forest. I think it is good for Biasini’s mental health and for mine to get out of the arena and go for a trail ride once a week if possible. I did not know if we would be having black flies or not. These are small little terrors that love to give you a nasty bite. So I put on Biasini’s ear protectors and took my trusty fly swoosher. This is like a small stick with 12 inches of black horse tail attached. It is very useful for swooshing away any flies that are bothering Biasini. We set off to the west of the barn and through the pine forest until we came out to the York Regional Forest. Just before we joined the forest trail I saw a lovely patch of Trilliums. These are the official flower of Ontario and they are found in the forests in early spring. As I am too advanced in years to just hop off my horse and take a close up photo with my phone and then hop back on I took some photos from atop Biasini.
Biasini was not too patient with my photo taking and wanted to get on up the trail.
We have had a few storms over the winter and many trees came down. The York Region Conservation sends in forestry workers to cut down any trees that are damaged, dangerous or fallen across the trails. One of the workers had a sense of humor and had cut a smiley face into the cut end of a big tree.
On the way back to the barn we passed through another lovely patch of Trilliums.
Although the forest is still very bare with little to no undergrowth and leaves only just starting to appear on the trees the fresh spring green is so vibrant and the Trilliums are a favorite with me. And……there were no flies!!
