Those 10,000 hours!

“Researchers have settled on what they believe is the magic number for true expertise: 10,000 hours.” – Malcolm Gladwell

Ten……Thousand……Hours!   Well I’m not sure I know where Gladwell finds the “magic” in that number but I would certainly say that expertise does take hundreds if not thousands of hours.  I know that  my Canadian coach Belinda Trussell has told me, dozens of times, to use my ankle to get a certain response from my horse Biasini. Let me be clear  this is not my heel, or my foot or the spur or the calf of my leg it is just the inside of the ankle. I bring that into contact with Biasini’s side and give a quick little lift and push.  Belinda has told me how to do this and has also taken my leg and manipulated me through it with Biasini standing still.

So why has it taken me almost two years to learn how to use this specific aid?  Well….to everything there is a season I suppose, and finally last week the penny dropped, the lightbulb came on and ……I learned how and when to give that little ankle nudge.

The result: I can feel Biasini lift his stomach up and his whole frame lightens and lifts and his trot or canter improves!  Here is a video clip of some trot work from one of my lessons this week.

I look at this and see that I need to stop tipping back, to relax my arms more and, and, and…..only a few thousand hours more!!

The beauty of horsemanship and why it is the ultimate metaphor for life itself

Indeed. Wise words Avery. Thank you.

I think the best thing about riding, and specifically dressage, is that you can’t ever get bored because there’s always something to work on. Even if our riding technique is perfection (hardly likely…) there’s always something going on with the horse that can be improved.

Thank you Alli! Those are my sentiments precisely!

Phew! Not for the faint of heart, this whole riding thing, is it? Sometimes I wonder if I am crazy, but then I realize that the answer is most definitely yes and that I am OK with that. 😛

Haha! Yes! It is not for the faint of heart and i just shake my head when non riders think it is just like sitting on an ambulatory sofa!😁

I’ve heard that before! It’s a bit depressing in a way but I choose to look at it positively in that all o can do is slowly chip away at this incredibly hard riding thing and hope to come out the other side some day better for it

This riding thing is incredibly hard and sometimes it is easy to be discouraged. I try to keep a lesson journal and I find that when I look back to a year ago I am actually making some progress even if it only miniscule. Also getting someone to video me is helpful as I can go back to previous videos and see that at least some small detail is improving! We just have to keep working away at it! Thanks for commenting!

When faced with a number like that, I just keep breaking it down, until it doesn’t seem overwhelming. So, only 1,250 eight-hour days, or only 250 5-day practice weeks – – does that help a bit? 🙂 (You’d better check my calculations, simple math is still a work-on-progress for me! ) A wonderful feeling when something that’s taken a long time to master, finally clicks into place.

Math or even arithmetic is not my strong suit either Robert. It does help to break it down but, in truth, i just take it one hour at a time! Thanks for commenting!😃

Biasini is like a 401(k) plan….takes a long, long time to build it up, but worth it in the end!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Ah Ha! Yes! That’s a nice comparison! Thanks Jeff!

Haha right…I think we can do & live & enjoy the moment & learn without “counting” 😉✌️

          Amen to that! Thanks Ray!
