The Weathered Boots and a Pot Bellied Pig!

Weathered. I have seen many wonderful responses to this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge: weathered doors and windows, buildings, stones…   But my response is a bit different. It is a pair of Ariat paddock boots. I don’t ride in them as I ride in tall boots but I wear these around the barn, to horse shows and they have been through sand, dirt, mud and muck. And they have travelled abroad!

I bought them for a trip to England, in 2007, while my daughter was there at university. She had a horse there and suggested we go for a hack together. I did not want to try to get my tall boots into my suitcase so I bought these paddock boots. They used to look quite smart so I wore them, on the plane, and on the streets of London, before going to Gloucestershire to join my daughter for the country hack.

She had borrowed a horse for me to ride and we set off along a country road on a nice winter’s day. What could be more pleasant?  After we had been out for about half an hour my daughter stopped her horse and dismounted.

“Why are you getting off?” I asked.

“Around the next corner there is a farm with a pot bellied pig. It always comes running out and Teddy spooks and gets in a real state. So I just get off and walk him past the pig and then get back on.”

“What about the horse I’m on?” I asked.

“Oh he’s fine.” She replied.

Around the corner we went and sure enough, out came a black pot bellied pig running towards us snuffling and snorting. My daughter’s horse did look quite frightened but  he followed her as she led him past the snorting pig. The horse that I was on barely gave the pig a glance. Once we had passed the pig he gave us  a snort of farewell and went back to his farm.

These eleven year old boots are now very weathered and may soon have to be retired but when I look at them I always remember that pig and my day out in the English countryside.

Oh how fun! It does not take long for my boots to end up looking like those. This summer I hope to find myself hacking out in the French countryside on show jumpers <3 My tickets have been purchased!

I love this. I love the memories and the smells and the smiles that can come from simply looking at a boot. It is a life that is lived well if you have a pair of dirty travelled riding boots mate 🙂

They look elegant, I love that the zipper is in front, I’ve never had such a model so far, as for parting with lovely more or less… weathered things like that, yes, that to me can be a bit hard too. I tend to keep things after they have become worn out, especially if I associate them with nice happenings or events, like the one you had with your daughter in England. 🙂 Such moments… things do feel like a time machine sometimes, and a fast dear one too, gives a warm feel to life. And by the way, such a cute title, I couldn’t wait to read about the… pot bellied pig, and then admired your daughter’s precision in avoiding riding past that place. 🙂

My daughter knew her horse well and she knew that if he got spooked she would be in trouble. But is she led him he trusted her. Thank you for your thoughts in this comment.

Thank you Nurul. They were multi function in their earlier days but now they are pretty much barn only but still very serviceable!

We (daughter and I) have the exact same pair of Ari at boots!! I’m on London today but will photograph them on my return to show you 😀
She won them in a magazine competition, plus gaitors to match .. when she stopped riding, I borrowed them!!!! xx

Ah! Amazing! My daughter was at Hartpury College in Glos. She was still riding then. I got a few things of hers after she stopped. I have to say my boots have held up well. A few cracks in the leather but soles, zipper all in good shape. Do let me see a photo is you can do one. This is a six degrees of separation moment I think!

Oh that was funny! The horse is afraid of the pig! I wore my paddock boots to an NBA game the other night and when I crossed my legs my husband said,” You know you have horse poop on your boots, right?” Oh well, at least it didn’t smell and I got 2 compliments on them!

Haha! I get remarks about my barn boots from my husband too!
