Polar Vortex? Blame Canada!

Seniors, such as myself, who leave Canada and the northern states of the US to spend the winter months in Florida are known as snowbirds. We are often blamed for cold weather in Florida. This year the north is being blasted with severe, record breaking cold; a Polar Vortex!  When my husband David and I arrived we knew what the reaction would be, from our  neighbors here, to the cooler weather that had arrived in Florida.

You brought this down from KAnuduh!”

We Canadian snowbirds have to take the blame. But , lets face it, even a cooler Florida with some rain is preferable to the desperate cold that is gripping the north.  Today at the barn the locals were looking for scarves to warp round their necks and horse blankets to  drape around their shoulders.  It was 18 Celsius.  That’s 60 Fahrenheit for goodness sake. Ok. Fair enough. If you are accustomed to life in a semi-tropical climate then this would seem pretty cool. And….it was raining…..and cloudy ……and there were some gusts of wind so, it could be classified as damp and cool.

Biasini and all of the horses have light sheets on at night. I bought a collection of sheets ranging from a lighter weight cotton sheet to a quilted stable sheet to a lined turnout blanket good to -10Celsius. So Biasini has sufficient wardrobe to look after him whatever the weather offers.

When the sun was still shining we were riding in the outdoor arena. What a luxury for those of us who, at home, have been in the indoor arena since the end of October.

Today with the rain we rode in the covered arena which has a roof but is open on all the sides. I only needed a light shirt and I was quite comfortable. Tomorrow we will start training in earnest with my Florida coach Lou Denizard.  I have no reservation in saying that Biasini and I are more than happy to be here in the “cooler ” Florida.

That must be a great experience. My country has never experienced it, so i got something new to learn.

I’m not sure it is an experience everyone needs to have. But it is hard to explain to people what extreme cold , like they have been having in Eastern Canada and the North Eastern USA, feels like because it is so far beyond normal cold. Anyway stay warm where you are!

  3. […] (yes, practically whole week) of frozen temperatures, I find myself itching to write to you again. Blame the Canadians and their polar vortex for my absence. I was too tired and my fingers too cold! But do not blame […]

Oh that is so funny Anne. Where I live in North Queensland we start shivering once he temperature drops below 18 degrees Celsius so I can totally relate to your Floridian friends

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes! I think if you are used to heat even mild cold can seem COLD. Also no one here has the clothing for it. Putting on three sweatshirts won’t cut it. I hope you are enjoying your summer down under!

      1. the_sand_arena_ballerina Avatar

Yes that’s half the problem we don’t have the correct infrastructure or clothing to accommodate it.
It’s quite funny really seeing all my friends overseas complaining about not being able to ride due to the cold and we are hitting average temps of 31 degrees Celsius (but feels like 37). Ekk!

My son is in Sydney for work and he’s enjoying the weather there.

Lol 60 is cold to my inlaws who live in fl too. Laughing as yesterday afternoon after a week of single or neg digit f temps it got up to 19 and was downright balmy! I actually was comfortable without a scarf and heavy gloves. Amazing how quickly the human body and condition can normalize things! Hope you enjoy your fl winter and have fun training.

LOL.. horse blankets when it’s 60 degrees?? Most of our horses were out in the -5*F weather today with no blankets here in Wisconsin. Only the 2 most senior horses are wearing them. I wish the polar vortex would have stayed in Canada and waited for you there 🙂

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Well Jen, the truth is the Polar Vortex was born in the great state of Alaska and Canada merely passed it on. Down here the horses are all clipped to nakedness as they are in full work and competition and in a non-vortex winter a winter coat would be too hot for them. That’s why they all need to be blanketed. Thanks for your comment it gave me my first smile of the morning 🙂

Oh my goodness, how can you stand it! 😜😜😜

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Do you mean how can I stand the cold ( lol) of Florida or the chat from others about having brought the cold down with me from Canada!

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Ah yes. Well the cold in the north would have me not riding much. Down here it’s certainly cold but bearable.

          1. fearlessinjesuschrist Avatar

It will heat back up before you know it!

          2. anne leueen Avatar

            It will indeed!

What a lovely arena and I have to say, I really do not blame you for traveling south for the winter. Florida being an excellent choice too! Enjoy 💕

Thank you and I’m glad you can identify with my preferring a warmer winter.

I spend a few winters at Tampa Bay Downs, and Hialeah and Gulf stream. I had several mornings where the water buckets froze. I get it the local backstretches always blamed us for bring the cold weather/

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yup! It is going down to 3 celsius here tomorrow night. I have known that here before but not for a few years. Oh well i’ll take the blame. Better than being at home in that brutal cold.

      1. Kelly MacKay Avatar

yes it has been -17 /-22 for a week and we are expecting a blizzard Thursday into Friday here in New Brunswick

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Yipes! Best of luck and I hope you will be able to keep warm.

        2. anne leueen Avatar

The CBC has referred to the coming storm as a “bomb” in your area! Stay safe!

          1. Kelly MacKay Avatar

weather bomb, when the barometric pressure falls to very low point, from a high pressure system . ususaly brings high winds and bad weather. Thank you for your concern. I am ready and staying in doors for the duration .
