Day Two: Bluegrass and Saddletramps!

You know you’re in Kentucky when;

  1. At the hotel the breakfast cereals are displayed below a portrait of the famous racehorse Secretariat.
  2. The Coke machine has a picture of a Thoroughbred racehorse on the front.IMG_20171228_0731005
  3. The Christmas tree is positioned between two prints; a dressage rider and a show jumper. They are both prints from the 2010 World Equestrian Games held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. IMG_20171228_0734192
  4. As I drive out of Lexington I see a sign for Man O’ War Boulevard.

Why do I listen to AM Radio?

  1. I can listen to the local news, the announcement of people in the region who have died recently, the locations of the mobile (pronounced mobeeel) blood donor clinic and the days and times of the  domestic abuse support group meetings.
  2. Talk radio: political, Christian, Conservative Christian, and discussions on why Darwin’s Evolution of the Species cannot be scientifically proven.
  3. Music: Bluegrass fiddle and banjo music. This is hard to beat and it is wonderful to listen to it while driving through Kentucky and Tennessee as this , I assume, it the home of this music.   Also the bluegrass songs are hard hitting country music: death, poverty, alcohol addiction, crimes of passion and heartbreak. Strong stuff!
  4. Finally the Stick Horse Cowboy Club and songs like Saddletramp! the days of the Saddletramp are long gone; a sort of vagabond who travelled about  with his horse and worked here and there with no ties or connections.

Why do I love to eat at Waffle House?

1. The ambience . the servers shout out their orders to the line cooks in their Southern accents. It is a boisterous atmosphere , friendly and fun!

2. They do serve coleslaw. The do NOT serve sautéed kale! And their grits are 5*, moist and yummy!  Gordon Ramsay would love Waffle House!

How do you make Tennessee iced coffee?

This can only be made when outdoor temperatures are several degrees below freezing.  At the gas station , after you have filled up , you find a large coffee sitting  in your  drink holder. It’s cold now and you no longer want it. So you take it and toss it onto the pavement and then you drive away.  About ten to fifteen minutes later your big puddle of coffee has frozen and other customers are slip sliddin’ away on it.   That , my friends, it Tennessee Iced Coffee.

That’s it for today. Another long, 12hour plus, 950 kilometers on the road . We are now in South Georgia and tomorrow will reach our destination. South Florida.
