That Rasping Roar!

In the still darkness just before the dawn I was awoken by the distant rumble. It was coming. Closer. Now the rumble became a rasping roar. The beast was upon us. It was out there doing it’s work. Roaring. Grating. Grinding.  The sound brought both comfort and concern. Comfort because I knew it would be doing it’s job so  well. Concern because there would be consequences for me when that job was done. The blue lights flashing on its head, the mammoth angled plow sweeping up the snow and flinging it onto the fields and ……onto the end of our driveway. Oh yes.  The road would now be clear but  depending on how much snow had fallen overnight the end of our driveway could be, as they say,  snowed in!

Yesterday I heard that great beast the snow plow roaring and rasping down the road in the darkness of 6:30 am.  Christmas day but the roads must be passable. That’s the Canadian way eh? And then just after the daylight began to spill over the frozen landscape …our snow plow guy arrived. Not driving some namby pamby pretending-to-be-a-swamp-skipping  truck but with his serious truck with articulated plow on the front and piercing white digital reversing lights on the rear. He was here to save the day! We would not be prisoners of our driveway.

The sun rose and the wind came up, blowing the feather light snow in sheets across the fields. It looked very pretty….from inside the warmth of our heated house. And , no need to call the Humane Society, that is not a real dog out there it is a metal sculpture of a dog.

This morning the temperature was this…..

I have not now , nor have I ever had, any proclivity for pretending to love the dead of the Canadian winter. The advantage to being older and retired is that we can go South. South to Florida, where my horse Biasini,  is already enjoying the warm weather. Tomorrow the journey begins. The temperatures will be even lower. My husband will drive in his truck and I will be in my car. Just in case there is a delay on the road in frigid temperatures we will each have a candle, in a tin, to light if we have to be stationary or stranded for a long time.  You can’t keep your car running for hours and lighting  a single candle will keep the temperature just above freezing inside the car.   Survival Dear Readers!

I do not usually write about “travel” but I hope you will join me as I post about our progress. The trip will start tomorrow morning( Wednesday Dec.27) at first light and we will arrive in Palm City Florida by Friday afternoon with overnight stops each night.

    That is cold!!
Snowploughs do that here too; we live on a farm and the plough deposits a snow hill across each gateway!!!

Thank you for your kind wishes and yes he does look real. That’s why I thought I had better mention he is just made of metal.
