The Travelling Horse

Biasini’s  travelling trunk is packed and ready to go; saddle, bridles, grooming kit. leg wraps,  and various other sundries he will need. You can also see on the left his health export papers. These will be inspected at the border. Before the sun rises tomorrow barn manager Carl Callahan will have got him ready and he will have been picked up by the big transport.

This evening he was having a little snooze in his stall after his dinner  and dreaming about getting to the warmer weather in Florida. I can certainly relate to that! It has been very cold here and since he had a full clip to be ready for the warmer temperatures of Florida he has been wearing  a quilted blanket with a collar in the stable and on top of that another thermal blanket for turnout.  He will be happy to dispense with all that!  He has done the trip before a few times and finds it boring so he is hoping there will be some interesting horses to chat with on the 30-36 hour trip. He will travel with a cotton sheet and on top of that a fleece lined blanket as it will still be cold until he gets further south and the temperature warms up. The transport drivers take the blankets off the horses once they get to warmer temperatures.

Today I gave him an electrolyte paste which he hates. He gave me the evil eyeball after I got it into his mouth.  He refused to take a piece of apple or a carrot afterwards as he didn’t trust me!  However it is important to give this as it will encourage him to drink which is very important for a long trip.   I have also had him on an immune booster for the past few days. Omega Alpha makes a product called Immune Plus. This is the time of year when there are a lot of coughs and snotty noses going around in the horse community just the same as the human community. I wanted Biasini to be setting off as healthy as possible and to be able to ward off anything he might encounter on the trip or when he arrives in Florida.

When he arrives my Florida coach Lou Denizard and his assistant Lindsay Sanderson will be there to greet him. He knows both of them well so he will settle in quickly. I will be going down right after Christmas.

And….today I rode Biasini and did the whole ride myself for the first time since my gall bladder surgery.  Fabulous!   He felt amazing and I could tell with the few little exercises I did that Belinda Trussell, my coach at home in Canada, has done a marvelous job of tuning him up! He is ready for the winter show season for sure!

Safe travels Biasini!  See you soon.

Way to go with the ride! Definitely a good Christmas gift for you 🙂
He looks so thrilled to be wearing double jammies in his stall… 😉
    Happy travels!

He has arrived safely in FL. They sent me photos this morning of him out cantering in the paddock and having a roll…no blanket and green grass. We go down right after Christmas. It is 16F here this morning and will be many degrees colder than that at night. Brutal! The ground is so hard and icy it is hard for the horses to enjoy their turnout and they are so bundled up. If we had a good ground covering of snow it would be better. Anyway Biasini is having a good time in the warmth!

Glad to hear he got there safely! What a great opportunity for him to get out of the harsh climate!
I remember the Swedish winters all too well. Before the snow fell, we’d have huge difficulties getting around on the icy, metal hard ground, peppered with hoofprints. I’m a clutz, and fell often, more than once actually cutting my hand on frozen lumps of mud, sharp like knives. Ugh. I don’t miss it :0
Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy a white Holiday weekend before you go!

You’ve got it Elinor! There is the mud season and there are big hoof holes that then freeze, rock hard and get coated it razor blade ice. We have quite a bit of snow now so that may help for the horses still here. BIasini doesn’t like the cold either even witha special high tech artic blanket with collar. Thanks for your comment the description of the mud and ice is perfect. Happy Christmas to you and your family!

By now, I bet you’re ready to head down there already! 🙂

Indeed I am. This whole snow and cold thing is nice for a few days but that’s enough.

            Yes 😨
Over here people are bundling their horses in fleece on the way out the barn to warm up.
            In 45 F.
            For real…
            😯😩
That’s not even good enough to keep milk cold in the fridge…

I always try giving an apple or carrot after deworming paste, my lovely mare enjoys spitting it back up into my hands. Guess it doesn’t quite taste the same! Lol

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Biasini refuses to open his mouth for apple or carrot after the electrolytes. But he still eats his dinner!

  11. sandyjwhite Avatar

I’m sure both Biasini and you are anxious to reach a warm climate.
I’m so glad you are back to riding and ready to go!
