So Simple! Yet So Difficult!

“I have a little  exercise that Cristolot gave me this week and I’d like to work on it with you.” That Dear Readers, was my first clue that this “little” exercise might be simple but it would not be easy. My coach Belinda Trussell trains with multiple Olympian Christilot Boylen.  Christilot seldom comes up with any “easy” exercises.  So here we go!

THE EXERCISE

  1. Starting from the side of the arena make a half circle to the right to the centerline.
  2. Go straight on the centerline.
  3. Change flexion and bend to the left and make a 10 meter circle to the left returning to the centerline.
  4. Go straight on the centerline and change flexion and bend to the right  and make a 10 meter circle to the right.
  5. Repeat

EXERCISE AT THE TROT.

  1. Trot the 10 meter circle to the right and on reaching the centerline walk, straighten, then transition to trot for the 10 meter circle left.
  2. Repeat the pattern walking each time  centerline is reached.
  3. Once that is clear then repeat without the  transition to walk on the centerline.

EXERCISE AT THE CANTER

  1. Canter the 10 meter circle right and on reaching the centerline, transition to walk.
  2. Walk a few steps, straight, on the centerline.
  3. Transition to canter and circle left.
  4. Repeat.
  5. Once this is being executed well repeat without the transition to walk on centerline. Instead straighten the horse, hollow to the new direction and ask for a flying change.
  6. Repeat with a flying change each time on the centerline.

Well, that doesn’t sound toooooo difficult does it?  Well let me tell you it is a lot harder than it might appear. What it so hard about it?

  1. Riding a good 10 meter circle. Not an egg shape or a wibbly wobbly  circle, a good, circular,10 meter circle.
  2. Riding  the horse straight on the centerline. No quarters in or shoulders in. Straight!.
  3. Transitions must be good, balanced and clear with no change of the horse’s frame on either the downward or the upward transition.

Here is a video of the canter circles with a flying change on the centerline. You will see that my circles are larger than the 10 meters because getting Biasini straight for the change took me a few strides. Belinda was videoing this using my phone and teaching at the same time. She gives lots of instruction for the videos so that, at home, I can have the benefit of a second lesson.

Thank you. I will try for more videos. I’m glad you are getting something from the video. BTW when I first got Biasini , who had been trained to PSG and my previous horse and I had also competed at that level I could not get a reliable single change with Biasini. I had to ask Belinda what aids she used, change my aids and go from there. It took several month for Biasini and me to arrive at an understanding. so i’m happy you think they are looking good now.

Reblogged this on Dream Big, Dream Often.

thanks for the reblog. And you could do this exercise even without a horse as part of an exercise regime. ( Just kidding!)

        Most welcome!

beautiful, practice makes perfect! I love your trainer and to be able to watch back the video is so smart. Wish we had that back some 30 – 40 years ago when I was in hunter training! Diana <3

The video is a very helpful learning tool. Thanks for commenting.

I’m going to try this as soon as I am done showing 4-3. My mare anticipates her changes and we have that 10 m half circle at the canter to a 10 m half circle at the counter canter.
I will video and post my response. Should be entertaining.

Great! I look forward to seeing it.

Isn’t that such a true statement!!! 😀 Circles are so much easier said than done, that’s for sure!!! But you and Biasini did it wonderfully well!!! Great job!

And I thought my exercise routine at the gym was tough.
This makes it look like a piece of cake!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Haha! I go to the gym too but I don’t have a trainer there all the time so it’s easier. The horse exercise is physical but also surprisingly mental!

      1. sandyjwhite Avatar

I don’t doubt that much of it is mental.
Even while going through my routine I must
pay attention to my form so I do the exercises
correctly and gain the most benefit.
        Hmmm…maybe I am a workhorse! (I love bad puns.)

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Hey puns are under appreciated but not by me!

            Glad to hear it, Anne.

I enjoy learning so much from your posts about how this all works. Fascinating how much effort can be put in, how the bonds work and all the progress. Excellent!

Thanks so much for this comment. Many people find dressage as interesting as watching paint dry so I am glad you can find some interest in the process.

I don’t think it sounds easy at all. I’m sure you will get it!

Thank you! I appreciate your encouragement. It is a ferry good exercise even though iit is difficult to execute.
