My horse. My Therapist.

The truth is none of us live the Fabulous Facebooked lives we read about and post about. The shit hits the fan for most of us ,at one time or another, and sometimes more often than we like or feel we can deal with.

Monday this week I got some difficult news. At 9am. That was how the week started.  No, nothing that meant my life was ending but a worry and, my least favorite thing, a spanner in the works of my life planning.  I don’t consider myself to be a control freak but I do take reassurance in being able to plan ahead to some extent. So when that spanner hits the works of my plans,  that makes me feel uneasy and anxious.

I felt glum. I felt worried. I felt stressed.

We’ve all been there. Haven’t we?  It can be problems of health, work, children, finances, you name it.  Worry. Stress. Anxiety. All of those little knots can start to twist us up.

What is my answer to it? First  I went to the gym which did not help much as I was totally lacking in motivation and felt like I was tired and feeble.

Then I went to the barn.  As soon as I got out of the car and saw Biasini in his paddock I could feel the first layer of angst and anxiety lift.  I brought him in, groomed him and tacked up and in doing so another layer lifted. It was a very hot and humid day so I did not want to do too much work with Biasini.  Luckily for me another rider at the barn was interested in going  for a trail ride. So off we went. The final layer floated away into the forest trees. Up , Up and away.

My trail companion took a couple of photos of Biasini and me  as we walked along.  Biasini relaxes on the trails and drops his head down like a Western trail horse. For him it is a break from the dressage ring and going round in circles.

That dark weight that had been resting on me had lifted and as we walked along I thought how wonderful it is to have a horse and to be able to ride.  My horse is better than drugs. He is the best therapy for me. He is, in fact, my therapist.

And as we walked along the trail I saw this little fellow hiding in a tree root.

I have no idea who put him there or why. But it gave my fellow rider and me a laugh.

All was well with the world. Nothing had really changed. I would still have to deal with the situation that had arrived at 9am that morning. But my attitude toward it had changed.  Biasini had helped me with that change. And that , Dear Readers, is what really matters.

True. We have all been there. Hope you could deal with it and pass it. We have no choice in these matters.☹️

That looks like so much fun! I used to live on a horse until babies and toddlers came along. Maybe one day it will fit better in my life again.

Thanks for the comment! I stopped riding when I was at university and started again 30 years later when my daughter started riding. Now she has kids and a full time job and I’m still riding. So there will be time for you to get back to horses !

That is great news! Maybe some day my children will want to ride.

I had my first lesson yesterday and what a lovely adventure I’m beginning. I’m going to be following your blog for more tips. Thank you!

Thank you and how exciting to be starting on a horse adventure.

Magnificent certainties here how a creature can be the best specialist. The best part is Biasini doesn’t charge.

Not directly but he is a “kept’ therapist. But worst every penny!

I often referred to my horse as my daily 1,000 pounds of therapy. I love the fancifulness of the gnome!

I hope that you are ok darling, but I love that you found a way to connect and release. I also find it hysterical that a little garden gnome was out and about waiting for you. Best surprise ever! Hugs to you lovely. Joanna

A great reminder that real life and social media portrayed lives are two very different things, and one of the main reasons I started blogging.

Hope all is well with you, and things improve.

Thank you for this comment. I am old enough to see the difference between Facebook fantasy and real life but it is a curious reality that is portrayed and you have so rightly said. Thank you also for your good wishes.

I really love this post, it is so real and honest and I know exactly how you feel. I’ve actually felt similarly myself recently- a bit down, low, that is until I go to the yard and spend some time in the fresh air with my horses. It is definitely something that non-horse folks will never understand but they really do blow the cobwebs away! Here’s to being the lucky one’s with horses as our rocks!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Indeed! Thank you for your understanding and support.

I love the gnome! What an amazing find. I can completely identify with this. I had the same trouble, hearing bad news, and could not contain myself. I’m not an emotional person, esp in public, and found myself crying in a crowded restaurant. So I did what came naturally- I went to the barn. Driving up the road, I immediately started to breathe better. I sat on Delight’s tack box, listened to the sound of hay munching and just sobbed. Delight, who usually hates attention, sat there next to me and even let me cry into his neck. I felt so much better afterward and wrote about it in my post, The Barn is My Safe Place. I’m sorry for your bad news but glad you are feeling better!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you for sharing this. It means a lot to have that “safe place” and how lovely that Delight knew you needed a shoulder to cry on.

      1. heatherwallace Avatar

Yes, he’s a gem. Not very affectionate, but he’s steadfast and loyal.

Amen! Horses are the best therapists there are!!! <3

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes they are and we are lucky to have them.

  15. Avery Avatar

Yes, I know exactly how you feel. My horses are also my therapists and always help me keep the anxiety at bay. It is all in the attitude. It is hard when it first starts hitting the fan. I had one of those moments this weekend. Catastrophic thinking set it. Then after a grooming session, I leveled, and made a just in case plan. Turns out, I don’t think I will even need it. All is well that ends well. So glad you have B. It is part of what makes us who we are.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you. I can tell from your posts that your horses are your therapy. I appreciate your comment Avery!

How random to find a gnome! It made me giggle. Aren’t we lucky to have our own therapists! Your trails are beautiful, and you speak my words exactly. It’s how I am making it through this life, the barn is my sanctuary. Love your post! -Diana <3

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes the little gnome is a bit of a mystery. But a good mystery I think. I’m happy to hear you have a sanctuary and therapist as well in your life.

This was a beautifully written article and it’s spot on. Horses have a way of bringing peace into one’s soul.

Biasini is too good. Getting a therapist in the form we like makes life beautiful. That is realized in your words ma’am.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you for your kind words.

Whenever I am stressed out or upset about whatever when I get to the barn I forget about all that I was thinking about earlier. Horses really have a way of doing that <3. I hope all is well and I will be praying for you.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Good to know that even as a new rider you are able to feel that and appreciate it.

  22. melroseequestrianservices Avatar

I like this truth. Our horses are therapy and I think anybody who has been down has seen their horse give them the “it’s ok I’m here” eyes. My boys saved my life a few years ago when I was low. The lift me in times of need and they make me see the world for what it is; this moment, then the next, then the next. Just breath Mel 😃

I’m glad your stress lifted and you had your therapy horse to help with that.

Thank you for sharing and being real and raw x

You are most welcome Mel. We are lucky to have these therapists.

Isn’t it wonderful that animals have an unconditional love for us poor humans? My mother does not like animals. So when we see other seniors in our community walking their dogs, she comments about how she just can’t understand it. But for seniors pets can be a lifeline out of isolation. I anticipate after my mother passes and I move back to Seattle and I will be getting a pet again! I know Biasini is not necessarily a pet, but the unconditional love is the same.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

You are absolutely right. I think dogs will forgive us almost anything and horses are a bit more like cats. If we do not treat them well they will not work so hard for us. Biasini is quite a character on the ground; he bobs his head around and makes faces at me and can get pushy but under saddle he works tirelessly and tries so hard to do well and get it right. I hope you will be able to get a pet. We have a little dog and my husband would not be without her. Thank you for this nice comment.

      1. fearlessinjesuschrist Avatar

That gnome is adorable! What a cute find. And I’m so glad you have Dr Biasini 🙂 Walks in the woods with the dogs do the same for me, it’s so renewing to be outside with the animals.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes it is. It puts everything into perspective.

A writer and a therapist…Biasini is the best!
Sitting down to write or grabbing my camera always help me to de-stress.
I wonder if those trail rides where Biasini can relax and let his head hang
and forget about the rigors of training aren’t great therapy for him, too?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

They are the best therapy for him and a necessary one. Carl Hester the great British rider and trainer always has hacking on the agenda for his dressage horses. They need a mental break from the focus of dressage.

  30. sscribner07 Avatar

I had such a bad day yesterday and for no reason at all. Turns out I just needed a hug from my horse. ..and he really hugs!

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Oh that is wonderful. They know when we need help and we are lucky to have them.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you. It will all sort out over time and the Gnome was such a jolly little fellow.

  32. Frank Prem Avatar

Hope the news gets better for you, Anne. Take care.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Thank you Frank. It will sort out over time and as with many things it just takes a bit to get over the initial reaction and then carry on. I appreciate your kind thoughts.
