“What if you knew her….”

“What  if you knew  her and found her dead on  the ground. How can you run when you know?”  Are you old enough to remember the  song Ohio by Neil Young?  I never thought those words would be apt for a death in 2017. RIP Heather Heyer.  This week the news really got me down. Charlottesville and then the BBC reporting the mass burial of hundreds killed in the mudslide in Sierra Leone and then Barcelona.
But….. then I saw this.

This grounded me in my love of horses and the knowledge that horses know us better than we know ourselves.  Horses can see right through any external bravado. If we are pretending we are ok and in fact underneath that we are not then the horse will be uneasy with us. Then know something is not right.
The reason the horses in this video accept these veterans is because the veterans have admitted they are in difficulty. They are not trying to hide anything.
There is a  Native legend , it may be Navajo and if anyone reading this knows please let me know in a comment below, that tells of the Creator assembling all the animals and saying to them:” Now I am going to create humans. I need  someone to come forward and volunteer to look after the humans.”
There was a long pause.
Then the horse stepped up.
“I will look after the humans,” the horse said.
Need I say more?

A really GREAT post and so true about horses being able to pick up on (sub)conscious emotions. They are a great therapy animals for people from all sorts of varying backgrounds!

Thank you and I agree that horses can provide a therapy and understanding that is very special.

I have a 5 yr old who can be very hot with me. Always safe, but hot. I love it, but it would scare most amateurs. A 14 year old girl tried him one time and he packed her around like a school horse. I was so impressed with how in tune to making sure she was safe he was. He was slow and steady and patient. He’s still very mentally immature but he knew how to take care of his rider. They are amazing animals, no doubt.

I knew of one paraequestrian’s horse that was quite naughty with the rider who would exercise him and a good as gold steady Eddy with his Para rider. They know!

Great post Anne. The video touched our heart and made us give thanks for everything and anything that helps heal the wounds that hold people back from a fullness of life.

Horses can give a wonderful gift to people who are honest with them. Thanks for your lovely comment.

I certainly do remember the song and the event. Must admit I didn’t tie this week back to those days but you’re right, it’s rather eerie. Love how you ended on a positive not and also love the legend, whereever it came from.

I don’t really know why the song came into my mind. It may have been because a 30 Something person asked me if the protests reminded me of the 60s. I said NO! In the sixties we were protesting war and. Asking for love and peace and the worst thing was a few too many stone’s being goofy.

I love that Navaho saying- I’d never heard it before. It has certainly been a tough week. The compassion of horses is amazing. Their empathy is limitless and I see it firsthand with my daughter’s therapeutic riding. Humans can learn a lot from animals.

I’m not sure it is Navajo. It may be another native tribe but Navajo is what has stuck in my mind. Horses are just amazing animals. They can see right through us and when they want to help or to work for us they give 100%. Thanks for stopping by.

I’ve always thought animals, especially horses, are mirrors to our souls. They are so sensitive that they reflect our thoughts and emotions sometimes before we are able to do so.

Horses are very wise and instantly recognise how they can help others. I used to volunteer with Riding For The Disabled and it was heart-warming to witness and be part of this wonderful work 💜

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes they are wise indeed. Your volunteer work with them must have been rewarding.

      1. whippetwisdom Avatar

It was and it would be something you would really enjoy if there was ever an opportunity near you to help out 💜

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes! I have volunteered at Paraequestrian competitions and that was remarkable. The sometimes severe disabilities of the riders and how well the horses behaved and did their job. It is inspirational.

Ya, well, my horse looks after her human way more than is necessary. I don’t need her checking out every detail of her surroundings for me, just in case…silly boss mare doesn’t get it that when we’re together I am the herd leader. However, I do understand and appreciate all the good that comes from generous horses whether of the hippotherapy variety or the therapy horse variety. I used to be a sidewalker for hippotherapy and now I am taking notice of all the wonderful horse therapy programs starting up for veterans and others with PTSD and also for rehabilitation of prisoners. Who would’ve thought?

Loved this story. Thanks for your blog! The world has certainly gone crazy so it is nice to get some routine and stability out of our horses.

They are lifesavers. Without my horse I think I would have gone into a pretty dark hole this past week.

They are also very good for children and adults with special needs! I wish I had a place to go close by. I will keep researching it!

Yes they are. I have heard of success with children who have autism.
