This painting shows the Rajah Dhian Singh ( 1796-1840) out hunting with his entourage. He is mounted on a grey stallion of the finest Indian breeds of Kathiawari and Marawari. This is indicated by the curved ears of the horse. The painting is set in the Punjab Plains of what is now Pakistan. These horses were bred from the Arabian and Turkmene horses and crossed with local horses. One of the Rajah’s attendants is riding a dun or buckskin horse and this color is found in the desert horses of Turkemenistan
