This is the second of my review updates in honor of Canada Day Weekend. This is another Canadian company that makes products for horses and humans. First of all I would like to update my review of Equus Soap Co. Bit Balm.
Since trying this product for my review I have continued to use it.
I love this Bit Balm!!! and I would NOT be without it.
I use this bit balm for every single ride. I never put a bit into Biasini’s mouth without it. It works perfectly to keep the area around the bit at the corners of his mouth moist and slippery and it does not get all gloopy like Vaseline. Also it does not get the bits, curb chain and parts of the bridle black and greasy the way Vaseline does. And…it is not a petroleum product. Who wants to put a petroleum product into their horse’s mouth every day? Not me!
Another plus with this product is that this year in Florida Biasini avoided getting a summer sore on the side of his mouth. Summer sores are ghastly things that can happen in the Florida climate. There are tiny microbes that are carried on the legs of flies. They have come from the horse’s manure and in the normal course of events they are ingested by the horse when grazing and carried to the stomach where they evolve and are eventually passed out again in manure. I know…that was more information than you wanted. But here is the important bit. Sometimes the microbes do not get ingested and they look for a bit of moisture on the horse’s body to get into. They can find it around the eyes, the mouth and any small wound. However once they find they cannot get down to the stomach to continue their life cycle they set up inflammation and prevent healing. This is a vicious circle and usually a vet will have to cut out the infected bit of the skin or tissue. Then there is another open wound and more flies etc etc. If the part of the horse’s body that has been infected can be tightly wrapped and kept dry that is good but you cannot do that on the eyes or the mouth.
Two years ago Biasini go a summer sore on the side of his mouth and it was six weeks before it healed and it would have been longer if we had not been coming home to Canada. These little bugs do not live in northern climates. The next year he got another one in almost the same place. This is not uncommon. I noticed this one right away and got the vet out to treat it.
So this past winter, as the weather got hot at the end of the season ,I was really worried he would get another one. But he did not. I think that the Bit Balm may have helped. It contains lavender ,rosemary and lemongrass and I think that may have helped deter the flies. I cannot be sure or give scientific proof but it is a possibility.
Equus Soap also gave me samples of their saddle soap and leather conditioner both of which I liked. The conditioner is very nice as it conditions well without being greasy.
Finally, last Christmas I bought several of Equus Soaps scented soaps to give as Christmas gifts. You can find Equus Soap on Facebook to see more products.
