Heritage and History

The Horse Guards. The Blues and Royals. The Changing of the Horse Guards. Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  That’s a fair bit of history and heritage right there, just in those words.

My Great Uncle, my Grandfather, and my Uncle were all in the Guards.  My Uncle rode in the Trooping of the Color for many years. When I was about eight years old I was taken to see the Trooping. It is a lengthy spectacular and I was getting a bit weary but then my Aunt pointed out my Uncle Tim riding , in full regalia, behind the Queen. Well!  I was pretty impressed.

My photos in response to the Word Press Photo Challenge for this week , Heritage, are of the Horse Guards, lined up at the Changing of the Horse Guard. The first photo is a close up of the boot, spurs, the trumpet and  the Standard.  I have to say I am in no doubt that those boots may not be  the most comfortable and a good deal of work has gone into the cleaning and  polishing of the boots and the horse’s tack.  Apparently the saddles are made to fit the horse with no regard to the  comfort of the rider. Hence the sheepskin pad the rider is sitting on. And the spurs…they may look big but there is not a single spur mark on the side of the grey horse so the spurs are more for show than anything else.

The horses all know their job and stand  patiently for the Changing of the Horse Guards ceremony before they move off. This group was finishing their time “on guard’ and were heading back to the barracks and stables as soon as the ceremony was over.

The horse guards always look spectacular in their regalia. I never gave a thought about the discomfort of riding in their boots. If they are uncomfortable, it seems like they never show it. How long do the parades usually last? Nice pictures and beautiful post.

It just looks to me that the boots are very stiff and I think that would not be very comfortable as they might be hard around the ankle and the back of the knee. The Changing of the Horse Guards ceremony is 15-30 minutes and the trip back to the Barracks is probably 20 minutes. The Trooping of the Color is much longer, maybe three hours in all. For that there are some 200 horses and many more Guards marching on foot plus military bands etc. The Queen no longer rides in the Trooping but rides in a carriage. I believe she still rides at Windsor for pleasure but not for State occasions.

I think it’s wonderful that horsemanship has been a part
of your family heritage for generations.

    Anne,
That must have been a special moment to see your grandfather behind the Queen. I guess it must have influenced your love and interest for horses quite a bit.

For a kid from Canada ( my parents had emigrated ) the whole thing was pretty amazing but seeing him in his dress uniform riding behind the Queen was a real highlight.

Wow great information. So what’s the criteria of the selection? What is spur?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

The Horse Guards are a division of the British Army. When yo enlist you can select to take part in the Horse Guards. The spur is the metal piece attached to leather that is on the heel of the riders foot. It is used to motivate the horse.

The round part at the end, is it?

And how it motivate the horse?

        1. anne leueen Avatar

Yes the round and curved part. If you imagine someone poking you in the side or kicking you with that on their foot you would want to move away from it right? So spurs are used to make the horse move. It only needs a light touch for the horse to feel it.

            Aaa okay.
