This morning not long after this post goes up my horse Biasini will be starting his journey home. He will be picked up by a big transport like the one in this photo.
He will have his own small stall and there will be five other horses on the transport with him. They have water to drink and hay to eat on the journey. And it is a long journey. Biasini will not arrive home to Oakcrest farm in Ontario until probably around noon Friday as the trip takes a good thirty hours sometimes more if there are any delays at the border crossing into Canada.
Biasini , like all the other horses will have been seen by a vet, two weeks ago, who will have certified that they are well and have been in the United States for at least 60 days. The vet then sends the certification document to Gainesville, Florida where the Agriculture agency looks at it and also checks to see that the horses have had a blood test done to check for equine infectious anemia. The document is given a stamp of approval and returned to the vet by courier. If Biasini did not have these health papers he would not be allowed to get onto the transport.
Does Biasini have wanderlust? Or a desire to hit the road and travel? Somehow I doubt it but once the trailer pulls into Oakcrest and he can hear the other horses calling out a hello to him he will be happy. Next week , no doubt, he will be writing his own post about his trip.
This year I came home before him but last year I was there to see him onto the transport. Here is a short video clip of him being loaded. Just by the way…..this is how you want your horse to load onto a trailer. Just calmly walking on. No worries.
