On the Road Again…

This morning not long after this post goes up my horse Biasini will be starting his journey home.  He will be picked up by a big transport like the one in this photo.1-IMG_20150416_094612

He will have his  own small stall and there will be five other horses on the transport with him.  They have water to drink and hay to eat on the journey. And it is a long journey. Biasini will not arrive home to Oakcrest farm in Ontario until probably around noon Friday as the trip takes a good thirty hours sometimes more if there are any delays at the border crossing into Canada.

Biasini , like all the other horses will have been seen by a vet, two weeks ago, who will have certified that they are well and have been in the United States for at least 60 days. The vet then sends the certification document to Gainesville, Florida where the Agriculture agency looks at it and also checks to see that the horses have had a blood test done to check for  equine infectious anemia.  The document is given a stamp of approval and returned to the vet by courier.  If Biasini did not have these health papers he would not be allowed to get onto the transport.

Does Biasini have wanderlust?  Or a desire to hit the road and travel?  Somehow I doubt it but once the trailer pulls into Oakcrest and he can hear the other  horses calling out a hello to him he will be happy. Next week , no doubt, he will be writing his own post about his trip.

This year I came home before him but last year I was there to see him onto the transport. Here is a short video clip of him being loaded.   Just by the way…..this is how you want your horse to load onto a trailer.  Just calmly walking on. No worries.

It’s so nice not to have to hustle getting your horse in the trailer. Since I’m usually by myself when loading or unloading, all I have to do is throw the lead across Hondo’s neck and he knows to walk right on in…. I took the center divide out so Hondo has plenty of room. Hope Baisini has a great trip!

A horse I had before Biasini was difficult to load so I trained him to load hinslef: just the lead line over his neck. Biasini is a very good loader. He has arrived and will be posting about his trip soon! Nice to hear about you and Honda!

Bye neighbor, enjoy your summer, and see you back here in the fall.

Thank you . Have a good summer.

I very much enjoyed reading your post. The video as well. I read in the comments about flying horses: how does that happen? Are there special carriers?

Glad you found it interesting. Last year I wrote a post on transport by ground and also transport in the air. You can see some photos of how they put the horses into pallets and lift the pallet up into the aircraft. Here is a link: https://horseaddict.net/2016/04/13/horses-on-the-road-and-in-the-air-2/

So beautiful to read it, I love horses so much. So you have purchased this horse?

That’s why he is not with you.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I have had him for almost three years. We left Florida last week and he stayed on with my Florida trainer. He comes straight through but my husband and I take three days to do the 2,400 Kilometers.

Sorry for asking you, but you are relocating or went on vacation? I didn’t get the background.

        1. anne leueen Avatar

We are Canadian and live in Ontario. But we are both retired and spend four months in the winter in South Florida to escape the winter. I train and compete in Florida as there is a very good competition circuit there. Then we return to Canada for the spring, summer and fall.

Okay, now I get it. It’s beautiful cycle to be honest. Ontario alot of my relatives lives there. So know the place a little bit.

You are right, if you can better to move to avoid harsh winters. One of my Aunt has the same routine. During winters she moved back to her home country usually. They are in Chicago, Illinois .

Sorry it’s getting late 3:41am, I am going to bed. Take care, and nice to know about you.

Looks like in the video he dropped all his worries in that big plop just before he walked up the ramp 😜

    1. anne leueen Avatar

He knew he was going to be in that stall for a long time so one plop less was a good idea!

Since I know nothing about life with horses, it’s fun to read of your adventures.

I’m sure you are both looking forward to being reunited. Hope Biasini has a safe,
    uneventful journey home!
Do horses ever suffer from motion sickness when riding in trailers or on airplanes?

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I don’t think they get motion sickness which is good as horses are unable to throw up! Some horses are more nervous than others but most of them travel well. I interviewed a person who has flown with horses and she said she thinks their ears pop like our do on take off and landing so they make sure they have hay to be eating .

What an incredible rig! I have a question about leg wraps. I notice you didn’t wrap his legs for the long trip is there a reason? Just curious.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

Personally I don’t wrap legs. Biasini has shoes in front and is barefoot behind so I just put on Bell boots in front. For this year’s trip he is wearing Soft Ride boots in front. I don’t wrap because I don’t like the idea of wraps on for over 30 hours. Also they can be taped on but I worry if one comes undone then what? The drivers will not go in and Re wrap them. Finally Biasini hates wraps on his hind legs so that is the clincher!

That was a pleasant walk in. I hope the journey was enjoyed. 🙂

He’s on the road now and will arrive noon tomorrow. He’s a good traveler.

Enjoyed reading this! I am transporting my 18 year old from U.K. To St Louis, MO and I’m a bundle of nerves! Just starting with the pre vet checks and organizing everything with a horse transportation company.

    1. anne leueen Avatar

I’ve shipped horses from Europe and they actually travel very well. I think they do not have as many fears about flying as humans do! The horse flight attendants are well trained experts so they look after them well. Your horse may be tired when he/she arrives but it will be ok. Thanks for commenting.

What a beautiful horse. I hope he has a happy trip home 🙂

Thank you. I’m always relieved once he has arrived safely.
