No Security Without Trust.

This weeks Word Press Photo Challenge is the word  “Security”. How does that relate to riding a horse?  How “secure” do you feel on a horse?  Can you be secure if you do not trust the horse? Let’s face it, riding horses is dangerous.  People can die riding a horse. Well,to be precise they usually die or are injured when they come off the horse.  It can happen even to the best of riders.

Horses are prey animals. They have survived the millennia by being aware of potential dangers and being ready to flee in a heartbeat.  In my experience there are two types of horses. There are horses that perceive a danger and decide they must flee, immediately, and they must get rid of that person on top of them to do so. The rider is seen as an added danger.

The other type of horse is the one who will perceive a danger and decide to flee but takes the rider with them. They see it as saving themselves and saving the rider.  Usually this type of horse does not loose it’s mind but just makes a quick change of direction.  That’s my type of horse.

When I take Biasini for a hack in the forest I know that he will be enjoying it but will also be aware of sounds and smells that may signal some danger. As you can see in the photo he has a fly bonnet on but his right ear is listening for something he can hear.  I know from experience that if Biasini thinks there is something not right in the woods he will just stop and refuse to go farther in that direction.  I may find this annoying but in the past he has done this and later I have heard that there were sightings of a bear in that part of the forest.

I trust Biasini to look after me. This trust gives me a true sense of security when I am on him. To see how other people have responded to this challenge click on the word security in the previous sentence.

Security and trust go hand in hand for both rider and horse. And in the end courage shows up too. Great writing.
